Fanoos Lantern

The Ramadan Lantern, known as the Fanoos in Arabic, became one of the well-known symbols of Ramadan about a thousand years ago. Since then, many Muslim artists have used their talents to produce beautiful Fawanees (plural of Fanoos in Arabic) in honor of Ramadan.

Pillars Preparatory Academy is now challenging all artists to create Fawanees in honor of Ramadan 2020, 1441 Hijri. Prizes will be awarded to the three best Fawanees.


Create a Fanoos that meets the requirements listed in the Judging Criteria below. To submit an entry, fill out the form below. The deadline for the Ramadan Challenge Fanoos Lantern is Monday, May 11, 2020 at 11:59PM.

Judging Criteria:

Fawanees submitted for this competition will only be considered if the following is satisfied:

  1. Fawanees must be 3 dimensional.
  2. Fawanees must have a max height of 50 inches or less (there is no minimum size specification).
  3. Submissions must include all the required documentation and files.

Technical – 5 points

Did the artist submit each item asked of him/her correctly in the form below?

This includes the Explanation Document, Initial Steps picture, Middle Steps picture, Final Steps picture, Best Picture, and Product Video.

What is the quality of the items submitted?

Production – 20 points

What skills and techniques were used in creating the Fanoos?

Did the design require a lot of time and patience?

How complex was the design? Was it difficult to execute?

Presentation – 25 points

Aesthetics and Design

Did the shape and materials used capture the Ramadan lantern theme?

How did the colors used complement the overall design?


How creative was the artist’s Fanoos in capturing the application of the Ramadan lantern theme?

Is the Fanoos design something that shows the artist’s unique personality/capturing of the Ramadan lantern theme?
